Saving money on the grocery bill is always at the forefront of everyone’s mind, but it might be even more so lately due to the swirling issues of inflation and tariffs.

Enter Tre’dish, a new delivery service that promises an average of 30 per cent savings on Canadian groceries by connecting consumers directly to local producers and eliminating inefficiencies in the traditional grocery supply chain.

However, it didn’t start out that way. Tre’dish actually began in 2021 as an e-commerce platform for small food businesses, but realized they could support both food entrepreneurs and Canadian shoppers by pivoting to a direct-to-consumer online grocery model.

“After our launch, we quickly realized that the economic downturn in 2022, driven by inflation and the rising cost of living, was creating a much bigger issue. The soaring cost of groceries was making it difficult not only for food entrepreneurs to thrive but also for everyday Canadians to afford essentials,” founder Peter Hwang tells YourCityWithIN.com.

“This shift allowed us to continue supporting small food businesses while also addressing the broader problem of high grocery costs for all Canadians.”

Hwang has spent over 28 years launching businesses, building and exiting four companies prior to this.

“Entrepreneurship isn’t just about business, it’s about creating solutions that impact people’s lives,” says Hwang. “Tre’dish is my way of tackling one of the biggest issues we face today, food affordability.”

Tre’dish is doing that by following their motto of “cutting out the middleman,” eliminating multiple layers of unnecessary added costs at traditional grocery stores that inflate costs, such as wholesaler fees, distributor costs, retail markups and listing fees. They’re able to avoid all this by working directly with producers, resulting in an average of 30 per cent savings on groceries.

You can get pretty much everything you would get from a typical grocery store from Tre’dish, and memberships cost $11.99 monthly or $99.99 annually, which includes unlimited free delivery on all orders over $30.

70 per cent of Tre’dish’s products are Canadian, and even better than that, they’re donating one per cent of every order to Feed Ontario to provide fresh groceries to those in need.

“What truly sets us apart is our commitment to supporting local Canadian businesses and tackling the systemic issues of food insecurity. We’re not just offering a cheaper grocery service, we’re building a platform that creates long-term change,” says Hwang.

“It’s not just about groceries. It’s about creating a stronger, more resilient community.”

Right now, Tre’dish is starting out in the GTA in Ontario, but they’re already gearing up to expand as there’s demand for the service across Canada.

“We’ve had over 10,000 comments on social media from Canadians asking us to expand to their areas,” says Hwang.

“Our customers love the savings, but what really excites us is that they see us as part of a larger movement to make food more affordable for everyone. We’re not just offering a better grocery service, we’re rebuilding the food system for the future.”

In addition to hopefully expanding beyond the GTA, Tre’dish is also working on personalizing their shopping experience as well as other future developments.

“One of the exciting new projects we’re working on is the Tre’dish CPG Partnership Program,” says Hwang. “This initiative is designed to help small, local Canadian food brands get their products into the hands of more consumers, without the typical fees and markups that usually make it difficult for them to compete. By cutting out these barriers, we’re able to offer Canadians more affordable, high-quality, and unique local products.”

Tre’dish is currently accepting applications for the CPG Partnership Program, meaning more small Canadian food businesses have the opportunity to reach more people, and also that there are always exciting new products to shop.
