A Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant for bamboo pressed noodles has just opened their very first location in Canada in the province of Ontario.
Kwan Kee is a global brand known around the world for their traditional bamboo pressed noodles, and has been receiving consistent Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition for over ten years.
Bamboo pressed noodles, also known as “jook-sing” noodles, are a traditional style of Cantonese egg noodle made by using a bamboo pole to beat the dough. The noodles are intended to have a unique al dente texture, and Kwan Kee boasts that they still make this iconic old school noodle dish in the most traditional way by hand.
The Kwan Kee brand was first introduced all the way back in 2010 by owner Li Sai Leung who opened his first restaurant in Cheung Sha Wan, and whose mother was also a wonton noodle vendor.
Some of the signature dishes that Kwan Kee is most famous for are shrimp wonton noodles, wonton and shrimp roe noodles, dumpling soup noodles, porcini mushroom dumpling noodles, shrimp wonton lo mein, pork feet lo mein, beef brisket lo mein and pork lo mein with chili and tomato sauce.
They’re also well known for their “Kwan Kee Big Bowl” with shrimp, wontons, pork feet and fish balls and their “House Special Big Bowl” with beef brisket, pork feet, wontons and dumplings.
“At Kwan Kee, we believe that the true essence of authentic Jook-Sing noodles goes beyond just taste; it’s about preserving a tradition and crafting a memory with every bite. Our noodles are not just a meal, but a dedication to quality. We’re committed to bringing you that perfect balance – springy, crisp, and tenacious – with a delicate, non-alkaline aftertaste that stays with you long after your meal. Every bowl of our classic ‘wonton noodle’ is made with care and passion, ensuring that you experience the heart of authentic flavors, made fresh, and served with pride,” reads the official website for Kwan Kee.
“At Kwan Kee, we’re not just making noodles; we’re honoring a time-honored craft, bowl by bowl. In a world where traditions are often lost, the labor-intensive process of making Jook-Sing noodles stands as a testament to craftsmanship and dedication. Though considered a dying art, we at Kwan Kee are proud to keep this heritage alive, ensuring that each bowl we serve honors the time-honored techniques that make it truly special.”
The first ever Canadian location of Kwan Kee is now open at 9390 Woodbine Ave. in Markham.
